- I was amused by your analysis of how Douglas Wilder won in
- Virginia to become the first elected black Governor in the U.S.
- (NATION, Nov. 20). I got the impression that the 58% of whites
- who voted for the white candidate were mostly bigots while the
- 90% of blacks who voted for Wilder were not. If the people of
- Virginia selected their new Governor because they thought he was
- the best man, then that is a fine thing. But if they voted for
- him merely because he is black, then his election is hardly
- indicative of what you call a "world bright with change."
