  3.     I was amused by your analysis of how Douglas Wilder won in
  4. Virginia to become the first elected black Governor in the U.S.
  5. (NATION, Nov. 20). I got the impression that the 58% of whites
  6. who voted for the white candidate were mostly bigots while the
  7. 90% of blacks who voted for Wilder were not. If the people of
  8. Virginia selected their new Governor because they thought he was
  9. the best man, then that is a fine thing. But if they voted for
  10. him merely because he is black, then his election is hardly
  11. indicative of what you call a "world bright with change."
